Description
The TBI Products Electric Fan Thermostat Switch (Part # FT180) is a precision thermal sensor designed to automatically manage under-hood temperatures in custom street rods, muscle cars, and classic truck restomods. By controlling your electric cooling fans based on actual coolant temperature, this switch eliminates the need for manual toggle switches, protects your engine from overheating in heavy traffic, and reduces unnecessary fan noise and electrical draw when cruising on the highway.
Optimized 180°F to 170°F Thermal Cycle
Turn-On Target (180°F): As soon as your engine coolant reaches 180°F at the sensor location, the internal contacts close, completing the grounding circuit to trigger your fan relay and start pulling high-velocity air through the radiator core.
Turn-Off Target (170°F): Once the electric fan drops the core temperature down to 170°F, the switch automatically cuts the circuit. This 10-degree operating window prevents the fan from short-cycling (rapidly turning on and off), extending the lifespan of the fan motor and the relay contacts.
Ideal for Low-Temp Thermostats: This thermal range is perfectly matched for vehicles running a 160°F or 170°F engine thermostat, ensuring the fan only activates when the radiator needs supplemental airflow.
Heavy-Duty Structural Design
Brass Sensor Housing: Machined from high-conductivity brass to ensure instant, highly accurate thermal transfer from the cooling fluid to the internal bi-metal switch element.
Standard Pipe Threading: Cut with standard male pipe threads (typically 3/8" NPT) for clean installation directly into your intake manifold, cylinder head water jacket, or radiator tank bung.
Single-Terminal Grounding Circuit: Designed as a simple, reliable single-wire grounding switch. When the activation temperature is met, it grounds the control circuit through the brass body directly to the engine block.

🛠️ Wiring Warning:Never wire this thermal switch directly to the power leads of an electric fan motor. High-amperage fan motor startup spikes will instantly weld the internal contacts of the sensor shut. This switch must always be wired to trigger the low-amperage control side (Pin 85 or 86) of a dedicated 30-amp or 40-amp automotive relay.
