Description
The Pete and Jakes Vega Steering Box Straight Pitman Arm is a foundational component for traditional "cross steering" setups on hot rods and street rods. Specifically designed to mate with the popular Vega-style steering box, this straight-profile arm is engineered to maintain proper steering geometry and clear chassis components in tight engine bays.
Precision Engineering for Cross Steering
This pitman arm is built to handle the high-torque demands of manual steering systems while providing the correct leverage for a smooth steering feel:
6" Center-to-Center Holes: This length is the industry standard for traditional Ford-style cross steering. It provides the ideal balance between steering effort and responsiveness, ensuring your manual Vega box doesn't feel overly heavy while providing a full turning radius.
Straight Profile: The straight design is ideal for custom builds where an offset or "dropped" arm might interfere with the frame rails, oil pan, or exhaust headers.
Dual-Tapered Tie Rod Hole: A critical feature for custom fabrication—the hole for the Ford-style tie rod end is tapered 50% from both sides. This allows you to mount your drag link from either the top or the bottom of the arm, providing maximum flexibility to achieve a level drag link angle and eliminate bump steer.
Vega Spline Pattern: Specifically machined to fit the standard output shaft found on GM Vega steering boxes and their aftermarket equivalents.
Durability and Construction
Heavy-Duty Forged Steel: Pete and Jakes manufacture these arms from high-strength steel to ensure they do not flex or fail under heavy steering loads.
Finish-Ready: Typically provided in a plain steel finish, allowing you to paint, powder coat, or plate the arm to match your vehicle's chassis.
Fitment Compatibility: Designed primarily for use with Ford-style tie rod ends, which are the standard for traditional hot rod steering linkages.
Application Tips
This arm is most commonly used on 1928–1934 Ford chassis (and similar custom frames) that have been converted to a Vega cross steering system. By allowing the drag link to travel across the car to the passenger side spindle, it provides a more stable and modern steering feel compared to original "push-pull" steering designs.
