Description
The Heidts Mustang II Subframe System for the 1962–1967 Chevy Nova (Chevy II) is a transformative upgrade for the early unibody Nova chassis. This kit replaces the outdated factory front clip with a modern independent front end, significantly improving steering precision and providing the "lowered look" popular in modern street rodding.
Engineering and Performance
Subframe Modernization: This system replaces the original bolt-on front clip with a heavy-duty crossmember and frame rails. This provides a stronger foundation for the engine and suspension, reducing the front-end flex common in early Novas.
Precision Steering: The kit moves the car away from the cumbersome factory steering box and long linkage, replacing it with a high-performance rack and pinion system. This results in faster response and a tighter turning radius.
Stance and Control: Standard with the kit are Stock or 2-inch dropped spindles. The dropped spindles are the preferred choice for builders wanting a lower center of gravity and a modern, aggressive profile without compromising suspension travel.
Engine Bay Room: By removing the factory shock towers and bulky components, this subframe creates a cleaner engine bay, making it much easier to install headers and perform routine engine maintenance.
Construction and Features
Custom Control Arms: Includes tubular upper and lower control arms. Builders can choose narrowed arms to tuck wider tires under the Nova’s famously tight front fenders.
Suspension Versatility: The base kit includes coil springs and shocks, but it is frequently upgraded to billet coil-overs for maximum adjustability in ride height and valving.
Braking Power: Standard equipment includes 11-inch GM-style disc brakes, with high-performance Wilwood upgrades available for those seeking superior stopping power.
Kit Includes:
Main Subframe: Heavy-duty crossmember and rail assembly.
Control Arms: Tubular upper and lower arms (Stock or Narrowed).
Spindles: Your choice of Stock or 2-inch Dropped spindles.
Brakes: 11" GM disc brake kit.
Steering: Manual rack and pinion (Power upgrade available).
Suspension: Shocks and coil springs.
Available Options:
Front Sway Bar: Highly recommended to control body roll and improve cornering flat-ness.
Inner Fender Panels: Custom sheet metal panels to provide a finished look and protect the engine bay once the factory inner fenders are removed.
Transmission Crossmember: An optional stock-replacement crossmember to ensure your drivetrain is properly aligned with the new subframe.
