The primary drivability issue with these vintage Mercury suspensions is that they were designed to be aligned with negative caster for easier steering effort, but that causes a lack of high speed steering stability. When power steering is used on modern cars along with modern radial tires and highway speeds, positive caster around 2-3 degrees is typically used.
These 1949 – 1951 Mercury original suspensions do not have the adjustment range for that much positive caster, often all you can get is 0-1 degree positive so the high speed feel is loose. If you drive long distances at Interstate speeds you may find that our complete new IFS systems are a better choice. If you drive locally at speeds more in the 1950 range (45-55 MPH) you may well be happy retaining the original IFS and lowering it with these 2 ½” Mercury Dropped Uprights.
A new kingpin set is included, with the bushings installed and reamed, ready for the installation of your Mercury Dropped Uprights on your suspension.
Stock drum brakes or aftermarket Disc brake conversions will fit, and all are available from Hot Rod Hardware (507-527-1020)
Please Note: The stock steering arms must be replaced with our matching dropped steering arms per our instructions to put the outer tie rod end back in it’s original location relative to the suspension in order to prevent bump steer.
